What types of sedation are available?
- Nitrous Oxide Dental Sedation—Many patients only need minimal sedation. Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is the most commonly used dental sedative. It comes in the form of a gas that you inhale through a nasal mask before your procedure. It reduces your anxiety rather than putting you to sleep. Once the mask has been removed at the end of your visit, the effects will wear off within minutes. You should be able to continue the rest of your day as normal.
- Oral Conscious Sedation Dentistry—Oral sedatives come in the form of pills or liquids. If this method of sedation is needed, you will take the medication at a set time before your appointment so that you will be comfortable once the treatment begins. Like nitrous oxide, oral sedatives make you less nervous about your dental work, while allowing you stay awake. However, you may not remember much of what happened during the visit afterward.
